Engineered for the Dachshund body. Because standard wheelchairs simply do not fit.
The Walkin' Wheels Dachshund Wheelchair is one of the most widely trusted mobility aids for Dachshunds in the UK, recommended by vets and rehabilitation specialists for over a decade. Where most dog wheelchairs are adapted from a general frame and hope for the best, the Walkin' Wheels is purpose-built around the Dachshund's unique proportions: an exceptionally long torso, short legs, and a spine that is more vulnerable to disc problems than almost any other breed.
The result is a wheelchair that actually works for Dachshunds rather than fighting against their shape. Available in two frame sizes - Mini for miniature Dachshunds up to 4.5 kg, and Small for standard Dachshunds up to 18 kg - with eleven adjustment points across height, width and length so you can dial in a precise fit as your dog's condition changes. It comes ready to use on carpet, hardwood, grass, tiles and pavement, and most owners have it assembled in around 15 to 20 minutes.
This wheelchair is used both as a long-term mobility solution for dogs with degenerative conditions and as a short-term rehabilitation tool after disc surgery. Whether your Dachshund is recovering from IVDD treatment, managing progressive hind leg weakness, or dealing with a ruptured disc, the goal is the same: keeping them moving, comfortable and engaged with the world around them.
Why Dachshunds Need a Specialist Chair
Standard dog wheelchairs are built around a typical dog body shape. For Dachshunds, this creates two problems. First, the standard harness sits too far back on their long torso, causing slipping and discomfort. Second, the frame geometry does not account for how short their front legs are relative to their rear. The Walkin' Wheels Dachshund version solves both: it includes a specialised Front Vest Harness (on Small frames) that wraps further around the chest and torso for stability, and the frame proportions are matched to how a Dachshund actually sits and moves.

Frequently Asked Questions
How quickly will my Dachshund adapt to the wheelchair?
Most Dachshunds adapt within minutes to a few days. Start with short 5-10 minute sessions indoors and gradually increase duration. See our training guide for tips.
Can my Dachshund sleep in the wheelchair?
No. The wheelchair is for supervised waking use only. Always remove it for rest, sleep and eating.
Does it work on carpet?
Yes. The urethane wheels work on carpet, hardwood, tile, grass and pavement. Very thick carpet or deep grass may slow movement slightly.
What is the difference between the Mini and Small frames?
The Mini frame is physically smaller and lighter, designed specifically for Dachshunds under 4.5 kg (10 lbs). The Small frame covers 3.2 to 18 kg (7-40 lbs) and includes the specialised Front Vest Harness to prevent slipping on longer Dachshund torsos.
Can it be used for temporary recovery as well as permanent paralysis?
Both. Many customers use Walkin' Wheels during post-surgery recovery (typically 6-12 weeks), then their Dachshund regains function and no longer needs it. The adjustability and resale value make this a practical choice for short-term use too.
How long does assembly take?
Most owners assemble the wheelchair in 15-20 minutes following the included instructions.
Is the harness washable?
Yes. Both the standard harness and the Front Vest Harness are fully machine washable. Remove them from the frame before washing.
